I don’t know why everyone has anything against the knot method itself. I’ve switched along time ago to this method and speeds things up a bit and noticed an increased tuning stability. BUT, I will say, using the knot technique and having that many winds around the post kind of depletes its purpose quite a bit and would recommend you find the spot for the desired tuning with its tension that it needs (that variable depends on string gauges you’re using for said tuning) to only leave 2 winds. This is because you don’t want to lay ALL the tension on the knot itself along with less excess string = less slippage overall. But yes, I recommend you still press down near the bridge, give them all a few pulls and bend the strings up/down the fretboard then retune back up. If it’s a clean job, the only 2 variables that will give you tuning/intonation problems is if it’s a change in string gauges, make sure to check after and the next day to see if the neck bowed (slightly adjust the truss rod back to where you left it (to find the spot, it will usually be pretty in tune after adjusted). And the other is just the environment. IE: heat naturally will cause strings to loosen the tension/tuning once the strings are opened and oxidation starts. Anyway, thank you for attending my TedTalks.

I play my forward roll then my forward/ reverse roll and finally my alternating roll. The song I begin my practice with is Cripple Creek after I've practiced my rolls I switch over to Claw Hammer to play some Pete Seeger style using my index finger to pluck upward rather then down as typical Claw Hammer is taught. Practice some bum diddy as Pete always instructed. Always slow at all these different lessons till lumbered up and to practice areas I'm not as sharp at as I need to be. Do it slowly so I can tell my fingers where I want them to go next. I'll practice speed later after I have played correctly first. I know practice is a must there are no short cuts. Practice isn't a chore if you love your instrument. That's not to say I may be consumed with other matters at times it's to say when I finally do find the time again it is enjoyable to be with the comfort that my instrument gives me. Practice then isn't a chore. Good video Ben.

Literally the man responsible for me picking up and learning the banjo when i heard AKUS play So Long So Wrong on a VHS recording my grandpa did of a TNN performance. Use yer fingers and thumb to reach around the neck to hold the block of wood. Wow!😮 There are tools designed for pulling shafts and studs. They keep the force aligned with the shaft so you dont bend it - which is a real risk as a number of comments have pointed out. Use the right tool to avoid foreseeable consequences.

3 out of 4 luthiers/techs that I know do knot favor this method. with the consensus being that all it accomplishes is to make the string harder to remove. clean windings with sufficient coils is their preference .
